PhD Career Opportunities
PhD in Francophone Studies from UL sets you on a course toward success, however you define it for yourself. Our program has produced scholars, filmmakers, authors, educators, curators, and experts in cultural heritage preservation. Graduates of our PhD program are engaged in a wide array of professional endeavors.
Higher Education
Our unique program prepares you for a career in higher education. With a PhD in Francophone Studies from UL, you will enter the highly competitive academic job market with specialized training in research, teaching, and professional skills. The French faculty consists of a diverse group of scholars who bring a wide array of expertise and who are committed to providing excellent mentorship of PhD candidates in both scholarship and teaching. In addition to excellent academic training, you will also have opportunities to develop as a professional through workshops and one-on-one mentoring.
Research
Our program's flexibility allows doctoral students to work on innovative dissertation research topics. Your committee works closely with you to help you develop the research skills that will last a lifetime and propel you into a wider variety of career options.
Teaching
You will gain experience teaching and hone your skills in the classroom. The skills you develop as an instructor are adaptable to a wide range of professional possibilities and prepare you for a world in which communication and interpersonal management abilities are in high demand.

Careers in teaching, international business, translation, and government service require the cultural and historical awareness, reading, writing, analytical, and argumentative skills that you acquire while completing your PhD in Francophone Studies. Potential employers include international aid agencies, international schools, intelligence and law enforcement agencies, import/export companies, foreign firms operating in US, travel agencies, and universities.
