Spanish Study Abroad
The faculty in Spanish and Latin American Studies strongly encourage study abroad. Students intending to work in our field after graduation or who intend to continue on to graduate school should be aware that study abroad experience makes them stronger candidates. Funding, including federal financial aid, is available for such study, and additional funding sources are listed on our resources page.
UL Lafayette accepts transfer credit from foreign universities if equivalent courses are given here, but there are two important advantages to studying abroad at a UL affiliated institution: (1) transfer of credit is facilitated and (2) Federal financial aid can be applied. In addition, the Gilman Scholarship can help Pell Grant-eligible students fund study abroad at UL-affiliated universities. Current affiliations are listed below, and we are working to add to these.
Students should also be aware of post-baccalaureate options including the Ministry of Culture English Language Assistants Program in Spain, which is a paid internship, and Fullbright grants for further study. Contact people for Fulbright and Gilman scholarships are Dr. Richard Slater (Education, Fullbright Advisor for UL Lafayette), Dr. Rose Honegger (Global Engagement, Gilman and Fullbright Advisor for UL Lafayette), and Dr. Leslie Bary (Spanish). Drs. Bary and García-Rubio have information on the English Language Assistants Program, and there is a similar program in Colombia.
